This is just the second year of Maritime Safety Week following the inaugural initiative last year and underpins the Maritime2050 Strategy launched in January 2019. Carl was a stakeholder who contributed to the Strategy. As of July 2019, Carl’s mission in shipping is to improve safety in 3 key areas: 1. Implementing the regulation for seafarers to carry personal oxygen and gas monitors in enclosed space entry 2. To improve training regarding the fixed fire suppression systems onboard, especially the risks of CO2 leakage and 3. The eradication of Modern Slavery at Sea.

This year the Maritime Safety Action Plan specifies the implementation method – click here to read the full details. Shipping Minister Nusrat Ghani MP delivered a speech outlining the necessity for this initiative in order to protect human life at sea, especially in the fishing sector. Key stakeholders include HMG Minister for Shipping from Department for Transport, MaritimeUK, Trinity House, Maritime & Coastguard Authorities, Marine Accident Investigation Branch, General Lighthouse Authorities, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, UK Chamber of Shipping – specifically their Safety Culture Working Group which Coltraco’s Clare Hunter is an active member of – among other groups.
