Reduce the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare

  1. To reduce the spread of airborne infectious diseases, Hospital wards and Pharmaceutical cleanrooms rely on negative or positive pressurisation. Adequate ventilation needs a minimum airtightness.
  2. Current practice involves measuring total air permeability but is unable to give meaningful value for leakage rate via individual leaks or locate them precisely. 
  3. Portascanner® COVID-19 measures individual leak sizes and leakage rates and use these to approximate total air permeability too. This is the only solution on the market to provide all 4 capabilities, in 1 instrument – identify leak sites, quantify the leak size, calculate the air flow rate, and then generate an air permeability value.

The only alternative to Portascanner® COVID-19 is 3rd party contracted door fan testing which is more invasive, time consuming, and costly. It cannot be used with patients in the room. Our instrument can. Without this, “patch and hope” measures are often used i.e. taping obvious areas of leakage (pictured).

    What evidence for air contamination in hospital settings?

    A December 2020 study on COVID-19 and air contamination indicates that 50% of air samples taken from hospital hallways and 20% from hospital bathrooms have high levels of coronavirus.

    • Air samples from ICU rooms were more than twice as likely to be positive for genetic material of the virus at 25.2% compared to 10.7% for non-ICU rooms.
    • More than one-fifth, 23.8%, of samples taken from bathrooms were positive for viral RNA.
    • Samples from hospital hallways were the most likely to come back positive at 56.3%.

    What are the risks of COVID-19 at sea in maritime environments?

    Air intakes must be set to ensure that the atmospheric pressure inside the accommodation is greater than that of the external atmosphere. In engine and boiler rooms, ignition sources such as those arising from boiler operations and electrical equipment cannot be avoided (see also Section 4.2.4). It is essential therefore to prevent the entry of flammable gases into such compartments. Residual fuel oils and gas oils may present a flammability hazard (see Section 2.7) and the routine checking of bunker spaces for flammability by tanker and terminal personnel is to be encouraged.     Is Portascanner® COVID-19 more accurate than existing tests?

    The Portascanner® COVID-19 determines the size of a leak ultrasonically and uses theoretical models to translate this reading to an airflow rate and air permeability value. This is as opposed to Door Fan Testing, where airflow rate is measured directly. While our in-house experiments have demonstrated a high level of accuracy, we are currently in the process of working with the National Physical Laboratory to allow our accuracies to be independently verified.

    There is, by contrast, no stated accuracy for the existing process of Door Fan Testing, nor does DFT possess the ability to accurately locate individual leaks.

    Why would I use Portascanner® COVID-19 instead of Door Fan Testing?

    Whilst regulations often require door fan testing, this will always require third party contractors with complex and expensive equipment. If the room does not meet standards,  the test must be repeated which is extremely costly. The Portascanner® COVID-19 allows for regular testing and ‘on the fly’ remedial action to considerably increase the chance of a successful test and to allow future maintenance. Additionally, the Portascanner® COVID-19 is able to locate leaks in a non-disruptive fashion, which is critical for taking remedial action with patients in situ.

    Is the instrument safe to use in a hospital setting?

    Yes. The instrument is a low voltage, battery-operated device that transmits and receives
    ultrasound. Ultrasound is used frequently in hospital environments.

    Does the instrument require medical certification?

    No. The Portascanner® COVID-19 is a maintenance instrument and therefore does not require medical certification.
