Overview

Precision Flow Rate Measurement

Portasonic® PLUS provides measurements to within ±0.5% of the true flow rate. This precision is enhanced by several features:

  • Customisable, pre-programmed database – With 19+ fluid types and 23+ pipe materials.
  • Integrated ultrasonic thickness gauge – To monitor pipe wall thickness and ensure it meets operational safety requirements.
  • Built-in signal oscilloscope – To provide sensor diagnostics and verify measurement process.
  • 3 measurement methods – To allow for the most appropriate application on different pipe size. See brochure for details.
  • Two sensor options – To fit different pipe diameters, with waterproofed variants also available.

System Integration with Datalogging and Export

Portasonic® PLUS includes a 4MB internal storage which allows measurements to be recorded and saved to the device. This can either be exported later via micro USB, or can be directly logged via Micro USB onto a PC in real-time.

Datalogging provides a verifiable record of system functionality and safety, and by recording the flow rate with a frequency of 1Hz as standard, allows for consistent recording and analysis of the flow rate.

The clamp-on Portasonic® PLUS sensors mean it can be non-invasively applied to almost any pipe as a continuous monitoring solution, but be easily transferred to a different location if monitoring requirements change. This gives Portasonic® PLUS dual functionality as both a permanent and portable monitoring solution, dependent on your needs.

3 Flow Rate Metrics

Portasonic® PLUS can portray flow rate in one of three ways to optimise data utility:

  • Volumetric Flow Rate: In litres per minute or gallons per minute, the volume of liquid transferred within a pipe. The standard measurement for most industrial applications.
  • Mass Flow Rate: In kilograms per minute or lbs per minute, the mass of liquid transferred within a pipe, calculated by the device using density and flow rate. Commonly used in loading or unloading processes, eg. fuel transfers.
  • Heat/Energy Flow Rate: In kilowatts per hour or British Thermal Units (BTU) per second, the amount of thermal energy transferred by a pipe’s contents. Commonly used for measurement in heating or coolant pipes.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Portasonic® PLUS has a 4MB internal storage which can record and store flow rate measurements. These can then be exported to a computer via Micro USB. The Micro USB connectivity can also be used to orient Portasonic® PLUS as a permanent monitoring solution, operating on mains power and continuously exporting real-time measurements to a computer monitoring the device.
The standard 9V PP3 battery provides Portasonic® PLUS with 12 hours of continuous use. Alternatively, the Micro USB connectivity can be used as a 24/7 power supply with any standard Micro USB charger. This means Portasonic® PLUS can also function as more permanent monitoring solution, operating on mains power and constantly exporting measurements to a computer monitoring the device.
The Portasonic® PLUS works on a variety of different fluid types, as long as the speed of sound in the fluid is known. There is a built-in database of over 19+ fluids ranging from: water, sea water, kerosene, petrol, fuel oil, crude oil, Freon R134a, Freon R22, diesel oil, castor oil, F-76 fuel oil, Novec™ 1230, glycol/water, etc. There is an option to input custom fluid types as long as you know the speed of sound in the fluid – this can be found from online databases The Portasonic® PLUS will also work on a variety of pipe material, as long as the speed of sound in the pipe material is known. There is a built-in database of over 12+ pipe material ranging from: carbon steel, stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316, cast iron, ductile iron, copper, PVC, lead, nylon, PE, aluminium, asbestos, fibre glass, etc. There is an option to input custom pipe materials as long as you know the speed of sound in the pipe material – this can be found from online databases
The Portasonic® PLUS will work on pipes ranging from DN15 – DN2500 (1/2” – 98”). It is recommended that you notify us with the range of pipes you will be testing so we can allocate the appropriate sensor type for your application The Standard Sensors (Model No. DM10) will work from DN15 – DN700 (1/2” – 27”) The Large Sensors (Model No. DS10) will work from DN25 – DN2500 (1” – 28”)
The accuracy and reliability of the Portasonic® PLUS’s flow measurement is dependent on your flow profile and how full the pipe is with your fluid To achieve maximum accuracy and reliability, the pipe needs to be full with the fluid during measurement The Portasonic® PLUS will work in fluids with up to 10% of gas or solid content. If your fluid contains a larger amount of solid content, a Doppler ultrasonic flow meter may be more suited for the application
If the paint layer is thin and in good condition, the Portasonic® PLUS will work well on the painted surface If the surface of the pipe is corroded, or the paint layer is thick, it is generally recommended to remove the paint layer before measurement is taken
The Portasonic® PLUS clamps onto the pipe, is portable and non-invasive which allows a single instrument to be used across multiple different pipes / pipe sections There are no installation costs such as drilling into pipes, therefore no downtime to the pipe network is present As there is no contact with the fluid being measured, there is no risk of pressure loss throughout your pipe network As with above, the fluid cannot damage the flowmeter, which could contribute to a longer lifespan and lower maintenance cost compared to inline flowmeters which are in contact with the fluid and risk being damaged by the pressurised flowing fluid
