At Coltraco, we’re proud to provide quality, reliable, and accurate ultrasonic thickness gauges. Made in the UK, these products have been tested and calibrated according to BS EN 15317:2013 standards on a calibrated carbon steel block manufactured to EN ISO 2400:2012 and ISO 7963:2006 standards.
This range of ultrasonic thickness measurement tools is widely used in non-destructive testing with an accuracy of +/- 0.1 mm. Our multi-echo ultrasonic thickness gauges can ignore paint layers up to 20 mm thick, making measuring material thickness straightforward.

We are proud winners of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, in both 2019 and 2022.
When sound passes through a material, it causes vibrations. Ultrasonic thickness gauges measure these vibrations to calculate material thickness. The unit sends a strong electrical signal to the probe, which emits a high-energy ultrasound pulse. This pulse travels through any coating and the material, reflecting from the back wall. The reflected echoes then reverberate within the material, with some portion returning through the coating each time.
The timing between these multiple echoes corresponds to the thickness of the material. A multi-echo ultrasonic thickness gauge checks a minimum of three echoes per pulse to ensure accuracy.
This technique works on various materials such as metal, plastic, and glass and is widely used in industries for corrosion detection and material integrity checks on pipes, pressure vessels, and structural components.
The Portagauge® 6 ultrasonic thickness gauge includes a built-in database with common materials such as carbon steel, stainless steels (304 and 316), cast iron, PVC, fibreglass, and more. It also allows custom material input for other applications.
Dual-element sensors in Portagauge® 6 improve detection on corroded or irregular surfaces by using separate crystals for transmitting and receiving ultrasound, increasing sensitivity to the minimum remaining wall thickness in pits.
Multi-echo gauges produce more accurate readings than single-echo types by measuring multiple echoes to isolate true material thickness. Classification societies require multi-echo ultrasonic gauges for marine and other applications.
Coltraco’s gauges comply with BS EN 15317:2013 standards, ignore up to 20 mm of coating, and provide accuracy of ±0.1 mm. The Portagauge® 6 features A-scan and oscilloscope trace functionality for precise verification. It comes with a robust case, calibration certificate, and couplant for convenience and reliable measurements.
