Ultrasonic Flow Meters UK

Using a flow meter is the simple and accurate means to measure and record flow rates in pipe work. Here at Coltraco Ultrasonics we are an ultrasonic flow meter supplier, for the Portasonic® 2.FL0. The Portasonic® 2.FL0 is the second generation of ultrasonic flow meter. We welcome you to get in touch to discuss how we can help you improve your pipework testing.

Ultrasonic Flow Measurements

The ultrasonic technology market share is growing as the technology replaces older flow technologies. Improved electronic processing, increased diagnostics and a growing confidence in ultrasonic performance contribute, in part, to this growth. At Coltraco Ultrasonics our ultrasonic flow meters are non-invasive, with sensors that clamp onto the side of the pipe. This avoids the need to cut into the pipe and interrupt the flow.

What is an Ultrasonic Flow Meter?

Ultrasonic flow meters are non-intrusive devices that use acoustic vibrations to measure the flow rate of liquid. The Portasonic 2.FL0 meter is an ultrasonic transit time flow meter.

Why Choose Ultrasonic Flow Meters?

There are multiple industrial applications that call for accurate ultrasonic flow transducer. However, traditional methods are not always an option, hence the need for nondestructive, noninvasive technologies and methods. Ultrasonic flow meters are the equipment of choice whenever contact with the measured fluid is not possible. Transit time ultrasonic flow meters are used in the majority of liquid flow applications because of their ability to obtain accurate measurements. With this technology, ultrasonic waves transmit upstream and downstream through the pipe wall and liquid in the pipe. By measuring the difference in the travel time and knowing the pipe size, the meter determines the velocity and flow. One of the more common purposes of an ultrasonic flow meter is to measure the velocity of a fluid in order to calculate the volumetric flow rate of a medium through a tube. This can be done through the use of a basic principle involving the transit-time of crystal transducer signals across the medium. Transit-time is a common flow meter measurement method that gives extremely accurate and repeatable results. Since this type of flow meter can work with a variety of fluids at a range of different temperatures, typically they will be calibrated for those specific variables.

How Ultrasonic Flow Transducer Work?

Our range of ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to determine the velocity of a fluid flowing in a pipe. At no flow conditions, the frequencies of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a pipe and its reflections from the fluid are the same. Under flowing conditions, the frequency of the reflected wave is different due to the Doppler effect. When the fluid moves faster, the frequency shift increases linearly. The transmitter processes signals from the transmitted wave and its reflections to determine the flow rate. Transit time ultrasonic flow transducers send and receive ultrasonic waves between transducers in both the upstream and downstream directions in the pipe. At no flow conditions, it takes the same time to travel upstream and downstream between the transducers. Under flowing conditions, the upstream wave will travel slower and take more time than the (faster) downstream wave. When the fluid moves faster, the difference between the upstream and downstream times increases. The transmitter processes upstream and downstream times to determine the flow rate. They represent about 12% of all flowmeters sold.

What does a flow meter do?

The Portasonic® 2.FL0 measures flow rates of clean liquid in pipes (liquid with not more than 5% solids or 2% gas).

How does an ultrasonic flow transducer work?

The portable transit line ultrasonic flow meter, Portasonic® 2.FL0 comes with clamp on ultrasonic transducers for non-invasive measurement. The ultrasonic flow meter principle is simple, the unit uses two sensors, one that acts as ultrasonic transmitters and the other a receiver to measure flow. There are three methods of operation; V-method, W-method or Z-method which refers to transducer positioning. The software calculates the time it takes for the ultrasonic pulse to pass from the transmitter to the receiver, which is dependent on the flow rate.

Is the Portasonic® 2.FL0 a high accuracy flow meter?

The Portasonic® 2.FL0 is a highly accurate liquid flow meter with an accuracy of +/-1% of reading at rates > 0.2 m/s, and the meter calibration takes place at an ISO 17025 certified lab.

What is the benefit of non-invasive testing?

The benefit of the Portasonic 2.FL0 is non-invasive testing with clamp-on external sensors: stopping the difficulties of cutting sections of pipe, risking pressure drop or contamination.

Is the Portasonic 2.FL0 a high temperature flow meter?

For fluid temperature exceeding 90°C, high temperature sensors are available up to 160°C.

What are the available ultrasonic flow meter sensors?

There are a range of sensors available to cater for small, medium and large pipe sizes. The pipe diameter range runs from 15mm-700mm. Please ask for the wide range of sensor options.

How do you measure water flow?

As mentioned above, depending on the application and flow profile, the flow sensors can be mounted in the following ways: i. V-method: the ultrasound transverses the pipe twice, ii. W-method: the ultrasounds transverse the pipe four times, iii. Z-method: transducers are mounted on opposite sides of the pipe and the ultrasound transverses only once. The modes are automatically selected by the liquid flow meter and are also user selectable.

Why buy the Portasonic® 2.FL0 and not a cheaper unit?

The ultrasonic flow meter price is related to its key features: that is calibrated to ISO17025 which is a better calibration standard, hence more reliable.

What are the applications of the Portasonic® 2.FL0?

There are a range of applications for the Portasonic® 2.FL0. Some of them include fire sprinkler systems, leak detection, marine maintenance, balancing systems and hydraulic system testing.

Testing fire hydrants & pumps

In accordance with BS9990:2015 a regulation for fire hydrant and pump testing, the transit time Portasonic® 2.FL0 flow meter is a simple & accurate means to measure and record flow rates in wet fire mains and pumped water pipelines.

For pressure regulating valves, according to BS9990 there is an allowable tolerance for flow and pressure at the landing valve of (750 ±75) L/min at (8 ±0.5) bar. Equally for pumps for wet risers, the pumps have to be capable of delivering 1 500 L/min which is enough to supply each of two fire service hoses with 750 L/min. For water tanks an on-site supply of stored water must be capable of supplying enough water to provide two landing valves with not less than 750 L/min each for at least 45 minutes.

It is essential that wet risers are operational in the event of a fire. The flow is calculated so that there is always enough to control a fire taking into account the size and construction of the building and the goods stored in it, or its use. Accurate flow data provides the chance to make energy saving measures by fine tuning the systems. Corrosion and obstructions can cause wet fire mains and pumped water pipelines to fail due to blockages.

Coltraco were delighted that the Portasonic® 2.FL0 portable ultrasonic flow meter was nominated as Security & Fire Excellence Awards, as Passive / Active Fire Project of the Year. The awards celebrated the best people, projects and processes that the security and fire sectors have to offer.

Introduced in 2018, the new and improved Portasonic 2.FL0 ultrasonic flow meter clamp on is an accurate, reliable and robust portable ultrasonic flow meter. Using the fire sprinkler flow meter, the ability to conduct spot check systems at mandated intervals ensures the full integrity of sprinkler systems.
