Overview

Portatank® is a specialist ultrasonic handheld liquid level indicator, compatible with various tank types and liquids, that quickly measures liquid levels in tanks from 0.5 – 15 meters in diameter, making it a safe and efficient tool for industrial and commercial applications to enhance operational safety, ensure compliance, and maintain precise liquid level monitoring.

Whether for bulk storage, industrial fluids, or high-value liquid materials, the Portatank® provides a reliable solution that saves time and minimises risk designed to meet the needs of a wide range of industries: including water treatment, oil and gas, liquid foodstuff, utilities and power generation.

Replacement for Unreliable Float Gauges and Cloudy Sight Glasses.

Designed to work as a complementary external and non-invasive instrument to overcome challenges with built-in fixed liquid level gauges, the Portatank® verifies the accuracy of built in flow gauges easily, as float mechanisms can stick providing the wrong level and sight glasses frequently grow cloudy over time reducing visibility of the liquid level.

One of its most common applications is detecting oil levels in transformers, including pole-mounted and pad-mounted transformers, switchgears and main ring units. Conventional manual test methods such as a dipstick pose a significant fire risk as it requires opening the tanks whereas using the non-invasive Portatank® ensures the system remains live with no downtime.

Key Benefits:

Portable and Adjustable: The Portatank® is portable and battery powered, enabling a single operator to measure numerous tanks of varying sizes, materials, and geometries.

Non-Invasive and Accurate: The Portatank® uses non-invasive ultrasonic technology, meaning there isno risk of contamination or compromising the tank’s integrity. This is crucial when dealing with sensitive or hazardous liquids, where maintaining the purity of the content or minimising exposure is vital. The device is also highly accurate, with measurements accurate to within ±10mm, ensuring reliable data for operators.

Cross-Applicability: The Portatank® is able  to measure various types of liquids non-invasively such as water, fuels, oils, coolants and liquid foodstuffs without risking safety and product quality.

Safe and Efficient: The Portatank® provides a safer alternative to manual measurement techniques, particularly for hazardous liquids or pressurised tanks. The quick measurement process ensures efficiency and minimal downtime in operational settings, enhancing productivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Portatank® will work on virtually any types of liquids – as long as it is in a liquid state, it can be measured! Density and viscosity affects the measurement only very slightly and can be safely ignored. If you have a particular liquid type that you think has a very high or low density and / or viscosity, please get in touch with us for assistance

If internal structures are present in your tanks, it is possible for the Portatank® to work as the ultrasound signal can still be reflected off your internal structures back to your sensor. Please get in touch with us to discuss your application if you feel you have a challenging application.More complicated structures such as transformers may be filled with internal structures, of various shapes and sizes which can cause the reflected sound waves to be inconsistent. In this instance, it is recommended to test on a section of your tank closer to the edges where you are able to obtain a clear pathway of ultrasound transmission through your tank. The Portatank® sensor is about 25mm / 1” wide and therefore you will

The Portatank® only works with single-skinned tanks as the sensor needs to be in direct contact with the tank wall. Please remove the layer of insulation from the tank before using the Portatank® for measuring the liquid levels
