Maintaining the watertight integrity of hatch covers, multiple cable transits (MCTs), and watertight doors is crucial for the safety and efficiency of marine structures. We explore the conventional methods of assessing watertight seals, specifically the Hose Test and Chalk Test. We will then compare them to the state-of-the-art ultrasound testing provided by the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PLUS, a world-leading ultrasonic hatch cover tester.

Conventional Methods: Hose Test & Chalk Test of Hatch Covers, MCTs, and Watertight Doors:

The Hose Test involves spraying high-pressure water onto the hatch covers or doors while visually inspecting for water ingress. Although these methods have been widely used in the past, they have limitations in terms of accuracy, reliability, and practicality. The Hose Test requires time-consuming preparations and may pose safety risks due to the use of high-pressure water. Similarly, the Chalk Test, which relies on observing chalk smudging caused by water ingress, lacks accuracy and consistency, making it less suitable for critical applications.

Hose Test:

The Hose Test is a commonly employed method for assessing the watertight integrity of hatch covers, MCTs, and watertight doors. It involves directing a high-pressure water spray onto the surfaces of the hatch covers or doors, while an inspector visually inspects for any signs of water ingress. This method relies on the inspector’s observations to determine the effectiveness of the seals.

However, the Hose Test has several drawbacks. Firstly, it requires time-consuming preparations and proper water pressure setup. The visual inspection process can be subjective, leading to inconsistent results. Safety risks may arise due to the high-pressure water spray, potentially endangering personnel and equipment. Due to these limitations, the Hose Test is being replaced by more advanced and accurate methods, such as ultrasonic testing.

Chalk Test:

The Chalk Test is another traditional method used to assess the watertight integrity of hatch covers, MCTs, and watertight doors. It involves applying chalk dust on the sealing surfaces of the hatch covers or doors and then closing them. Any water ingress can be detected by observing chalk smudging caused by the moisture.

However, the Chalk Test has limitations in terms of accuracy and reliability. The visibility of chalk smudging can be affected by various factors, such as environmental conditions and the roughness of the surface. This makes it less suitable for critical applications where precise measurements are required. Moreover, the Chalk Test does not provide quantifiable data, making it challenging to assess the severity of any potential leaks accurately.
