EU Directive 2009/45/EC of 6/05/2009 like SOLAS, allows a “careful visual inspection” of the welding connections, supplemented by ultrasonic test or other types of leak test, where the use of a hose test may cause a damage to machinery, electrical equipment, insulation or outfitting items. Allows using the ultrasonic test where hose testing is not practical (Lloyd’s Register, Rules and Regulations for Classification of Ships, July 2016, 3/1/9). Thus, the Portascanner™ ultrasonic hatch cover testing can be used for ships in the same situations as provided by SOLAS: where the use of flooding and hose testing is impractical.
