Coltraco Ultrasonics’ handheld Portagauge® 5 is our most capable multiple echo ultrasonic thickness gauge for measuring thicknesses of various metals and hard plastics whilst ignoring any coating up to 20mm thick. The Portagauge® 5 is distinguished by its multiple echo technology and A-scan and oscilloscope trace functionality as standard. Developed to meet BS EN 15317:2013 which is the standard for the ultrasonic testing, characterisation and verification of ultrasonic thickness testing equipment, the Portagauge® 5 is available for export globally now, and widely used in non-invasive testing and the non-destructive testing industry (NDT I).
The Advantages of A-scan and Oscilloscope Trace Functionality
The Portagauge® 5 is capable of ignoring any coating, such as paint layers, up to 20mm in thickness, allowing the material’s true thickness to be measured to within +/-1.5mm.
A-scan and oscilloscope trace functionality as standard to observe material condition and help verify correct backwall echo, alongside multiple echo technology, distinguish the Portagauge® 5. The thickness measuring instrument’s A-scan feature shows the ultrasound echoes, giving the user complete confidence that the unit is working, and shows the multiple echoes critical to metal thickness gauging.
Alongside highly sensitive dual-element sensors, this allows the Portagauge® 5 to detect almost all forms of corrosion, including pitting corrosion, a localised form of corrosion by which cavities are produced in the material. Without A-scan on heavily corroded metallic structures, one is liable to measurement error.Flexibility to Cover Multiple Applications
The availability of 4 different frequency sensor options, with measuring ranges between 1.5mm to 100.0mm, and a dedicated sensor for measuring high attenuative materials such as engineering plastics, greatly enhances the inter-applicational compatibility of the Portagauge® 5. Measurement units are available in both metric and imperial, allowing the Portagauge® 5 to be used no matter on location.
For marine applications, the Portagauge® 5 meets Classification Society requirements for a marine thickness measurement tool, and has an LCD backlight to enable working in dark, poor visibility spaces.
Following testing by Coltraco Ultrasonics’ Physicists and Scientists on a large number of different materials, the Portagauge® 5 includes a database containing the speed of sound data of over 12 different materials, loaded into the unit for user-convenience, as well as the option to enter custom materials.
Ease of Use
Not just for use by an NDT company, the non-destructive, non-invasive nature of the Portagauge® 5 allows one operator with minimal training to undertake NDT testing on multiple materials and areas across the same site with no installation costs, such as drilling into pipes, and no impact on the material or system being measured, increasing safety for both personnel and assets.
The ability to accurately, reliably, and regularly perform plastic and metal thickness testing in 30 seconds by using a single, portable, durable hand-held device facilitates quick, precise, low-cost remedial work on corrosion and damage in various structures before this is critical, retroactively allowing users to go above and beyond existing safety regulations, potentially decreasing the cost of damage repair in the future.
Built with exceptional quality materials in the UK, competitively priced in the market due to Coltraco Ultrasonics’ unique R&D position, and available for exporting globally now, the Portagauge® 5 allows customers to justify actively engaging in going above and beyond existing regulations as an integrated and essential element to their business activity, within our vision of the Safesite™ on land and the Safeship™ at sea. Customers, personnel, and assets alike will be better for it.
