A new British invention, following the co-location of our Physicists and Scientists at Durham University, a globally outstanding centre of teaching and research excellence, Coltraco Ultrasonics’ handheld Portagauge® 5 is our most capable multiple-echo ultrasonic thickness measurement device, widely used in non-invasive testing and the non-destructive testing (NDT) industry.
Capable of ignoring any coating up to 20mm in thickness, allowing the material’s true thickness to be measured to within +/- 0.1mm, the Portagauge® 5 allows its user to perform the ultrasonic thickness gauging of various metals and hard plastics, facilitating better-faster-cheaper NDT inspections, primarily for corrosion monitoring.
Built with exceptional quality materials in the UK, competitively priced in the market due to Coltraco Ultrasonics’ unique R&D position, and available for exporting globally now, the Portagauge® 5 ultrasonic thickness tester has been developed to meet BS EN 15317:2013 which is the standard for the ultrasonic testing, characterisation and verification of ultrasonic thickness measuring devices.
Featuring highly sensitive dual element sensors alongside multi-echo technology and A-scan and oscilloscope trace functionality as standard to observe material condition and help verify correct backwall echo, the Portagauge® 5 is capable of detecting almost all forms of corrosion, including pitting corrosion, a localised form of corrosion by which cavities are produced in the material, giving its users total confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the Portagauge® 5’s thickness measurements.
Technical support and advice are available throughout the lifetime of the unit, with R&D experts and a vast network of Global Distributors and Heads of Operation also available to help you with your application.Better-Faster-Cheaper Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with the Portagauge® 5
The Portagauge® 5 allows for better-faster-cheaper NDT inspection and thickness monitoring over other NDT methods:
- Better – Following testing by Coltraco Ultrasonics’ Physicists and Scientists on a large number of different materials, the Portagauge® 5 includes a database containing the speed of sound data of over 12 different materials, loaded into the unit for user-convenience, as well as the option to enter custom materials. This inter-applicational compatibility is enhanced by the availability of 4 different sensor options, with measuring ranges between 1.5mm to 100.0mm for pipes of varying thicknesses, and a dedicated sensor for measuring high attenuative materials such as engineering plastics. For marine applications, the Portagauge® 5 meets Classification Society requirements for marine thickness gauge measurement equipment, and has an LCD backlight to allow working in dark, poor visibility spaces.
- Faster – Not just for use by an NDT company, the non-destructive, non-invasive nature of the Portagauge® 5 allows one operator with minimal training to test multiple materials and areas across the same site with no installation costs, such as drilling into pipes, and no impact on the material or system being measured, increasing safety for both personnel and assets.
- Cheaper – The ability to accurately, reliably, and regularly check the thickness of various metals and hard plastics in a single, portable, hand-held device facilitates quick, precise, low-cost remedial work on corrosion and damage in various structures before this is critical, retroactively allowing users to go above and beyond existing safety regulations, potentially decreasing the cost of damage repair in the future.
Within Coltraco Ultrasonics’ vision of the Safesite™ on land and the Safeship™ at sea, our technologies allow customers to justify actively engaging in going above and beyond existing regulations as an integrated and essential element to their business activity. Customers and personnel alike will be better for it.
