GARD and DNV GL have combined efforts to raise awareness of the vulnerability of a ship as a result of deficient watertight doors. Between 2005-2016, the main cause of losses (over 50%) was due to damage due to a ship becoming foundered (sunk or submerged). There is difficulty in managing watertight doors, which are essential for watertight integrity, due to their many possible failure modes and their exposure to wear and tear. It is for this reason that an awareness is promoted of their understanding, operation and maintenance, for engineers, officers and crew members.
