All Coltraco ultrasonic liquid level detectors operate using advanced ultrasonic testing (UT), a reliable and versatile Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method. The core of this system is the ultrasonic level sensor, which emits high-frequency sound waves, typically between 200 kHz and 2 MHz. These mechanical waves pass through the solid tank wall, reflecting off the internal liquid surface.
The sensor contains a piezoelectric crystal that converts electrical signals into ultrasonic pulses (the reverse piezoelectric effect). Once the pulse travels into the tank, it either reflects off the opposite wall if liquid is present or fails to return if no liquid is present.
This pulse-echo method enables accurate detection of fluid presence and levels. The device’s LED indicators signal the presence or absence of liquid.
This process does not require internal tank access, allowing for external, side-wall readings. Ultrasound gel ensures optimal signal transmission by eliminating air gaps between the sensor and the tank wall. This design ensures precise, real-time detection in diverse environments.
