The Naval Damage Control Conference 2024 sought to discuss innovative technologies and training, with the objective to improve damage control, firefighting, and survivability in the Navy. The key priority was discussing damage control best practices and fostering collaboration between industry and militaries to address current and future challenges. The conference was attended by a global audience of active-duty personnel, civilian specialists, naval engineering teams, and ship builders.
Coltraco was honoured to present alongside CSD Sealing Systems on the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO. This is a cutting-edge instrumentation designed to ensure the watertight integrity of naval vessels. The presentation highlighted the critical role of this instrument in helping captains and crew make informed decisions about ship survivability.
Key Points from Our Presentation:
- About Coltraco Ultrasonics: We shared our company’s history and commitment to the Royal Navy. We illustrated our research and manufacturing excellence, which has made us partners of choice in our respective industries.
- Our History with the Royal Navy: We discussed our decade-long collaboration with the Royal Navy, providing watertight integrity testing equipment across the fleet and to prime subcontractors. This collaboration has significantly improved the general standard of watertight integrity across the fleet and their feedback has been central to guiding the development of our instrumentation.
- Introducing the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO: We showcased our latest innovation, the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO, which identifies, measures, and helps remedy potential leak sites. This device can be used in port and at sea, even under dynamic stresses, to understand and prioritise water leakages. This instrumentation provides a vital contribution to the internal “damage control battle” and can help save the ship at critical junctures.
- Benefits to Global Navies: The Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO is designed to enhance the safety and survivability of naval vessels worldwide. By providing automatic reports, it gives naval personnel the data they need to make crucial decisions during damage control moments.
We greatly enjoyed attending the conference with CSD Sealing Systems. It provided an invaluable opportunity to network with peers from around the globe, discuss key issues, and explore innovative solutions to enhance damage control and firefighting capabilities. We look forward to continuing these conversations and collaborations to advance the field of naval damage control.

The Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO
The integrity of a watertight structure is critical. However, the harsh, saline and turbulent maritime environment renders the seals in cable transits or watertight hatches prone to corrosion and deterioration. Excessive water ingress can pose a significant risk even to the extent of losing lives and vessels. Water ingress through supposedly weathertight structures is common and has significant implications. Consequently, watertightness monitoring should be conducted regularly, using a reliable and simple means.
Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO allows an operator to photograph a test site before testing which then allows the operator to plot the exact leak location allowing for easy repair and reinspection. This instrument calculates the flow rates of individual leaks as well as an overall leakage rate for a single hatch and can relate these rates to compliance requirements for watertightness and weathertightness. It requires minimal training and a single operator can non-invasively test a large number of hatches or seals consecutively. This makes Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PRO a highly accurate and easy-to-use way of ensuring marine safety and regulatory compliance.
